A Man Who Does Not

I am learning to be a man
     who does not put himself first.
I am not the big picture. I am only
     a part of it.
I am learning to be a man
     who does not let others down.
I am not the agenda. I am only
     an item on it.
I am learning to be a man
     who does not just do different.
I am not the plan. I am only
     a step toward it.
I am learning to be a man
     who does not insist on his way.
I am not the movie. I am only
     an actor in it.
I am learning to be a man
     who does not have to be right.
I am not the solution. I am only
     a part of it.
I am learning to be a man
     who does not have
          to be in  charge.
I am not the program. I am only
     a component of it.
I am learning to be a man
     who does not have to make
          sure of my share.
I am not the team. I am only
     a member on it.
I am learning to be a man
     who does not try to be God.
I am not Him, but only His child.

On these do nots
     I must most aspire.
I must be selfless.
I must be consistent.
And I must walk humbly
     before my God.
