I see dad
When blueprints are being drawn
In the wee hours just before dawn.
I see dad
When a tractor clears and grades a lot,
Breaking ground for a new home plot.
I see dad
When a foundation's being poured,
Must be level for it to be floored.
I see dad
When walls are being laid to frame
Plumbed and straight is the aim.
I see dad
When a roof's being raised to the ridge
Rafter by rafter from peak to edge.
I see dad
When paneled siding needs nailing
As carpenter's hammers do the wailing.
I see dad...
He did it all in those days,
Roughing-in the electric, no shock
Taping-off even the dusty sheetrock,
Laying any kind of different floor,
Hanging in and out every door.
I see dad
Where houses are being built,
I see dad
Where homes in love are wilt.
