Narrow of the Night

There are those among us
     whom we've given our trust
          to light the way in the dark.
They shake our ready hands,
     and with a shoulder sure hug,
          assure us their word's no lark,
As they filch free even the most
     shallow of our too few pockets
          in the wide of daylight,
They hang the shirts off our backs
     on hangers in their own closets
          in the narrow of the night.
