When it was finished,
His blood dripped
From His outstretched
Toes, down the foot
Of an old Roman cross,
Wedged tight into a hole
Dug to hold the beams erect,
And on through a crack
In Golgotha's rocky skull,
And then splattered
On God's Mercy Seat,
In a dark chamber below,
Waiting all those years
To pay sin's debt.
With this selfless act
Jesus wedged His foot
In salvation's door
Before it slammed shut,
Waiting for a time
To pry it open wide
And enter our hearts.
