Adam and Eve heard the sound
of God walking
in the garden
in the cool of the day.
Since then, though, no one's
heard such a sound
by anyone,
anywhere, at any time of day.
You can try to imagine it,
inclining your best ear
toward the
distant echos of creation.
It's a beautiful image,
to be sure; we've all had
walks like
that, or wished we'd had.
Perhaps it was fallen leaves
crunching beneath
His every step,
or grasses swishing
Against His legs as by them
He surely passed.
perhaps it
was the rhythm of His steps
Dancing upon a granite trail
after a midnight rain,
or maybe His
oh so steady breathing,
Like saying His own name
over and over again,
exhaling and
inhaling: "YHWH, YHWH."
